Things to See and Do in Malaga
August 5, 2009
Malaga is known as the Capital of the Costa del Sol – which means ‘Sun coast’. As Malaga gets around 330 days of sunshine each year, it is well suited to it’s name.
In the winter, it is still warm enough for a round of golf at one of the courses knick named the Costa del golf. Why not try Marbella or Mijas Golf or the world famous Cadiz, Sotogrande and Valderrama courses.
You can take a nice leisurely drive along the coastal route to one of the many fishing villages that are spread along the Mediterranean. Why not visit one of the nearby cities, like Rincon de la Victoria, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola or Alhaurin de la Torre.
The water is mildly warm at this time of year if you are feeling adventurous enough for a short dip.
You can even take a drive along the coastal route to Gibraltar. Here you can shop in the narrow mainly pedestrianised city centre or enjoy a coffee at one of the pavement cafés and bars. You can shop in their quaint handicraft shops and don’t forget the duty-free shops selling everything from cigars and cigarettes, spirits, jewellery, and perfumes as well as probably the best 100 percent cotton underwear in the world.
Other places you can easily drive to from Malage are Torremolinos, Marbella, San Pedro and Estepona.
There are lots of museums and exhibitions all over the area which are open all year through, but some not to miss are:
The Picasso Museum, which was his home as a child and opened in 2003. Call: 952 060 215
The Museo Interactivo de la Music (MIMMA) Call: 952 210 440
The Contemporary Art Centre, entrance FREE. Call: 952 120 055
The Centro Cultural Provincial offers concerts, exhibitions and an art gallery.
The Tablao Flamencio in Avenida de los Guindo has Flamenco Shows and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 22.30 to 06.00.
The Eduardo Ocon Bandstand in The Malaga Park has lunchtime concerts by The Malaga Municipal Band who are one of the oldest bands in Spain.
Every town in Malaga has its own annual procession and a patron saint. Christmas brings its own charm and excitement when from the smallest town to the largest city, you will find displays, contests and ‘live’ nativities. Look out for one of the fabulous ‘gypsy’ Christmas celebrations.
The Verdiales Festivals are an experience you only find in Spain normally on December 28 but can be found at many fairs and festivals all year long. Spain at Christmas time can be very exhausting with the numerous vibrant, exciting festivities that are available to enjoy.
